Thomas L. Haney 1942-2020

DURHAM, N.C. — Thomas Lowell Haney, 77, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019, in Durham, N.C.

Thom was born Jan. 14, 1942, at home in Columbiana, to the late C. Lowell and Dorothy (Shockley ) Haney.

After graduation from Columbiana High School in 1960, Thom attended Westminster College and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He then served in the U.S. Air Force at the USAF hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Upon completion of his service, Thom moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., and graduated from both Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Thom had a very successful 43-year career in psychiatry and epidemiological research with Duke Medical Center in the Clinical Research Unit until his retirement in 2010. He had 37 research works with 3,171 citations.

He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Haney of Chapel Hill; his sisters, Karen Dillon of Austintown and Heather MacLeod of Toronto, Canada; four grandsons, Collin and Parker Skedsvold of Augusta, Ga., and Shea and Liam Dillon of Cincinnati; and five nephews, Brent and Shawn Dillon and Gavin, David and Alec MacLeod.

Thom was a kind and generous man who loved to cook and bake for his family and friends.

A memorial will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at Homestead Kitchen.
