Florence C. Phillips, 1926-2020

BUTTE, Mont. — Florence Catherine Phillips, 93, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020, at Big Sky Senior Living.

She was born Thursday, Nov. 11, 1926, in Youngstown, to John and Catherine Ruman. She was raised and educated there, and on Sept. 13, 1952, she married James John Phillips. Together they had three children, James, Michael and Diane.

Following Jim’s retirement, they relocated to Whitehall and lived there for 15 years, until failing health brought them closer to family in Butte.

Florence was a quiet, soft-spoken and generous person. She and Jim loved ballroom dancing. When they would dance, the other dancers would stop and watch them. They always caught everybody’s attention.

She belonged to Holy Spirit Parish, and her deep devout faith gave her comfort through many of life’s trials and tribulations, including the loss of her parents; her brother, Robert; and her husband, Jim; who passed away in May of 2010.

She is survived by her children, James (Joanna) Phillips of Butte, Diane (Brian) McChesney of Valley City, Ohio, and Michael Phillips of Struthers, Ohio. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Nicole (Dan) Hanni, Jared, Natalie, Alyssa and Alexis; and great-grandchildren Mia and Konner.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside entombment services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday morning at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum.

Memorials in her memory may be made to Compassus Hospice. Express condolences at
