Erroll Varin Garrett Sr. 1961-2020

BAYTOWN, Texas — Erroll Varin Garrett Sr., 59, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020.

He was born Jan. 30, 1961, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Joe Louis Garrett and Syphfronia Garrett. His birth occurred on the fifth-year matrimonial anniversary of his parents.

He accepted Jesus Christ at an early age as a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Girard, Ohio. At the time of his passing, he was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Baytown. He served as a deacon, in the brotherhood, as both vice president and later, as president.

The value of education was stressed early in his life. Errol attended and graduated from The Rayen School in Youngstown in 1979. He excelled in basketball and was voted most likely to succeed by his classmates. Erroll would go on to graduate from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He earned his master’s degree from Prairie View A&M in education. He completed the superintendent certification curriculum. Erroll’s career path included working for City of Baytown, North Forest ISD, Goose Creek ISD, Lamarque ISD and Beaumont ISD. Additionally, Erroll worked for Sylvan Learning Centers as a mentor, seeking to inspire all to higher education.

Erroll was married to Agnes Barfield in 2004 until his passing. Erroll was the father of two wonderful children, his namesake son, Errol Varin Garrett Jr. (Meshell) and his baby girl, Shara Deshelle Garrett (Meshell).

He started his own business, DeFence, detachable fence products. In May 2020, he received a patent for his idea. He was so proud of his invention; he said his father had given him the idea. His business was starting to flourish. He planned on using the business to support his entire family.

His hobbies included eating, spending time with his family, watching and participating in sports, traveling, playing dominoes, listening to music and doing his most famous dance move.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, MC and Masie Triplett and Bessie and Garrett; his father, Joe Louis Garrett; nephew, Dea’Sean Tyree Tommy; uncles, Howard Garrett and Bob Edmundson; and godmother, Bessie Dates.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife; his children; his siblings, Darrell Garrett (Cheryl), Verretta Garrett, Vernessa Garrett and Valarie Tousant (Keith); godmother, Jackie Kennedy; goddaughter, Shana Broussard; and a host of nieces, nephews, families and friends.

Services will be held at Frazier Funeral Home on Saturday, July 18, 2020. The viewing will occur from 9 to 11 a.m. A limited seating service will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in The Chapel of the Pine.
