Peter P. Chila 1942-2020

CANFIELD — Peter Paul Chila, 77, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

He was born May 9, 1942, in Youngstown to the late Paul and Anne Jurenko Chila and had been a resident of Canfield since 1997.

A graduate of Girard High School class of 1960, he also graduated from the former Youngstown University in 1964, completed his master’s degree at California State College-Los Angeles in 1967, and his doctoral degree at the University of Akron in 1977.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, where he had served as an usher, the Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity’s Youngstown Alumni Club and The Wolves Club of Youngstown.

An educator, his career included four years as a teacher and 40 years as a principal and central office administrator in school districts, universities and federal government programs located in Northeast Ohio.

Upon retirement from public education in 1995, he was employed by the Diocese of Steubenville as an assistant superintendent, prior to his appointment as superintendent in 1998, from which he retired in 2008.

Surviving are his wife, the former Phyllis Jeanne DeGennaro, whom he married Aug. 14, 1965; his daughter, Maureen Anne Chila of Cleveland Heights; his son, Paul Steven Chila of Houston; and his brother, Dr. Anthony (Helen) Chila of Athens.

His brother, Michael Bernard Chila, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were private.

The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Youngstown State University Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Peter’s memory.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel.
