Robert P. Shreve, 1928-2018

DELAWARE — Robert Pryor Shreve, Ph.D., 90, formerly of Austintown, died Dec. 29, 2018.

After graduating from South High School, Youngstown College (now Youngstown State University) and Kent State University, he earned a doctorate in education from Case Western Reserve University in 1964.

His 35-year career in education included various teaching and administrative positions with Austintown, Niles and Youngstown City Schools. Named as Mahoning County Schools superintendent in 1969, he served in that position until retirement in 1985. He was also the superintendent of Mahoning County Joint Vocational School from 1969 to 1973.

Professional and community activities included president of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, board of directors of the State Teachers Retirement System and four years as a member of the national board of directors of the AARP, including two years as chairman of the board.

As a Navy lieutenant junior grade during the Korean Conflict, he was operations officer on a rocket-launching ship and later was assigned as communication officer on the staff of the Commodore.

A faithful Christian, Bob was a teacher, preacher and elder in the Church of Christ.

His final act as an educator was donating his body to The Ohio State University School of Medicine for anatomical research and training.

He is survived by his wife, Delores “Scoop” Harrison; sons, David, Charles (Deborah) and Paul (Lisa); four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A service of interment will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 5400 Market St., Boardman.
