James W. Dunn Jr. 1929-2019

COLUMBUS — James William Dunn Jr., 90, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019.

Born June 19, 1929, to J. William “Bill” Dunn and Lela Geis Dunn, Jim was a graduate of South High School, class of 1948.

He was affiliated with the Phi Gamma fraternity at Youngstown College, later Youngstown State University, where he graduated in 1952 with a B.A. in Business Administration. It was there he met his wife of 67 years, Bette Louise Savage. They were married July 19, 1952, at St. Edward Church.

Dunn began his career working with his father at Bill Dunn Studebaker. He held positions at Gulf Oil and Top Value Enterprises before retiring in 1991 as vice president of Fire Protection Equipment Company.

Jim Dunn was a lifelong member of the YMCA, as well as a charter member of the Boardman Swim and Tennis Club and the Boardman Racquet Club. Mr. Dunn was a champion handball player and tennis champ, both in singles and in mixed doubles. He was an avid fisherman, traveling to Canada annually with close friends.

An active community member, Jim was a member of the Saxon Club, past president of both the Ridgewood Civic Association and the Heintzelman Reunion, as well as a strong supporter of Boardman public schools and athletic events.

He was a member of St. Charles Parish, where he was named Man of the Year in 2000 by the St. Charles Men’s Club. Known for his commanding bass voice, he sang for years in the St. Charles choir.

Besides his wife, Bette, he leaves a son, Gregory (Patti) Dunn, and daughter, Cathleen (Michael) Puskar, both of Columbus; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Cushwa Dunn of Portland, Ore.; sister, Marilyn Adsit of Boardman; nine grandchildren, Alex (Victoria) Puskar, Zachary (Callie) Puskar and Abigail (Drew) Puskar Goodman, Sean (Rachel) Dunn, Colin (Art) Dunn and Kate (Matt) Dunn Imielski, William Dunn, Mercedes (Sal) Dunn Certo and Kathleen Dunn; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, J. William Dunn III.

Friends may call 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, at St. Charles Church, with a funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m.
