John T. Muller Jr. 1940-2019

KALAHEO, Hawaii — John T. Muller Jr., 79, formerly of Youngstown, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019.

He was born Aug. 29, 1940, in Youngstown, the only child of Margaret M. and John T. Muller. For the last several years he lived in Honolulu, then Kalaheo, Hawaii.

John graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1962 and earned a graduate degree from Indiana University in 1964.

He began working for his family’s business, Boardman Supply Co., while in high school. He worked at many positions and became the chief operating officer. He and his dad enjoyed working together.

He was proud of his relationship with the company’s customers. He wished to be remembered for truth, honesty, integrity, on-time deliveries and quality products. John was an expert in concrete and masonry technology and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with those who requested help.

He sold his interest in the family business in 1992 and began working as an independent stockbroker / financial adviser, retiring from that business in 2003. John’s mom was a knowledgeable investor and fostered his love of investing.

John worked as a church administrator for several years during semi-retirement. John developed and owned the University Co-op Apartments with his friend, Thomas W. Bode.

John was active in aviation for many years. He was a commercial, instrument-rated pilot and a flight instructor.

John was active in civic and church affairs. He was a member of the Youngstown Jaycees and held several offices. He was the director of the Greater Youngstown Soap Box Derby in 1969. At Canfield Presbyterian Church, he was a member of the Worship and Music Committee, an elder, member of the choir and the Clerk of Session.

John loved music and studied voice for several years. John served as an elder at Youngstown First Presbyterian Church and sang with its choir. He served Eastminster Presbytery, first as a member of the Committee on Ministry and later as the Moderator of the East Area of that committee. In Hawaii, John sang with various church choirs and community choruses. He sang with Temple choirs in Cleveland, Akron and Honolulu.

John’s greatest joys were the nurture of his family and the success of his family’s business.

He leaves his children, Tia J. Martyns of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Shirley M. Kilonsky (Paul) of Steubenville; a stepson, Lee W. Stoneburner (Katherine) of Canfield; a stepdaughter, Kitty C. Stoneburner of Park City, Utah; seven grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and his former wife, Janet, of Koloa, Hawaii.

John was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and his and Tia’s dogs, Loki, Maui and Mosby.

There will be no calling hours or memorial service.

The family asks that donations in memory of John be made to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, 200 Lothrop St., Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
