John C. Stiver 1926-2019
NILES — John C. Stiver, 92, of Niles, passed away at 5:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at Hospice House.
John was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Youngstown, the son of the late Charles H. and Neva Stewart Stiver.
He was a 1944 graduate of Howland High School. Following high school, John proudly served our country in the United States Army. A World War II veteran, he was stationed in the Philippines and Germany.
John partnered with his three brothers to own and operate their father’s family business, C.H. Stiver Chevrolet, a staple of the Niles community since 1932. John also owned a Chevrolet dealership in Paulding for many years. While residing in South Carolina, John ventured into the pest control industry, operating the company for numerous years.
Mr. Stiver was an 18-year volunteer fireman for the Howland Fire Department, achieving the rank of captain at the time of his retirement. John was a member of Howland Community Church or Old Fort Baptist Church when he resided in South Carolina.
He enjoyed the outdoors; you could find him at his favorite fishing spot or at the beach with his feet in the sand. He enjoyed a good round of golf or appreciating and maintaining his flower gardens.
He is survived by a son, the Rev. Thomas (Tina) Stiver of Brookfield; two daughters, Margaret (Jack) Beard of Urbana and Betty (Dave) Harness of Niles; three brothers, Charles S. Stiver of Cortland, Thomas O. (Sheila) Stiver of Cortland and Earl M. (Beatrice) Stiver of Girard; eight grandchildren, Brian, Tim, John, Jeff, Josh, Maribeth, Jonathan and Jillian; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Martha Diehl Stiver; a sister-in-law, Elma Stiver.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019 in the Wm Nicholas Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 614 Warren Ave., Niles, OH 44446. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, at the funeral home with the Rev. Thomas Stiver.
