Far-right party wins in Germany
MAGDEBURG, Germany -- The far-right Alternative for Germany party has surged to a resounding victory in a regional election. But it fell a little short of winning a majority Sunday in its quest to form the country's first far-right state government since World War II.
The party of Germany's unpopular leader, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, slumped to a disastrous result in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. The anti-migration and Russia-friendly Alternative for Germany's candidate for governor said, "We have written history" and the party has a clear mandate to govern.
Fireworks explosion kills at least 10
TEMASCALCINGO, Mexico -- Mexican authorities say at least 10 people died and another 64 were injured when pyrotechnic material exploded during a patron saint festival in a town in the State of Mexico. The blast caused a wall to collapse, burying several people.
The explosion occurred Saturday night next to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz parish church in the central Mexican city of Temascalcingo, with 66,000 residents. Hundreds of them were preparing to watch a fireworks display that is part of a religious festival when the blasts caught them off guard.
Volcanic island in Indonesia erupts
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano has erupted and it has caused flight cancellations at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The eruption happened early Sunday with volcanic ash affecting parts of western Indonesia. Indonesia's Geological Agency reported that the volcano showed signs of activity since Friday before the eruption. No casualties were reported.
But authorities warned residents to stay at least 3 kilometers or 2 miles from the crater. Thousands of passengers were affected as airspace around several airports was closed. Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation is closely monitoring the situation. The volcano remains active with officials evaluating the situation.
2.000 sick from suspected free meals
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Nearly 2,000 people, most of them students, have fallen ill in suspected food poisoning outbreaks linked to Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meals program between Sept. 1 and Sept. 3. About 1,950 students, teachers and Islamic boarding school pupils were affected in Central Java, East Java, West Sumatra, Aceh and South Sulawesi. No deaths were reported. The latest incidents add to a growing number of food poisoning cases associated with President Prabowo Subianto's flagship program, which aims to feed nearly 90 million beneficiaries. Health Ministry data show more than 50,000 people have been affected in 560 cases nationwide since the program's launch in January 2025.
