Pope Leo calls for renewed
prayers for victims of 9/11
VATICAN CITY -- Pope Leo XIV, above, the first American pope, has called for a renewed commitment to peace as he marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S.
Speaking from St. Peter's Square on Sunday, he offered prayers for victims and those still affected by the tragedy. He urged everyone to pray for peace amid ongoing global conflicts. On September 11, 2001, Leo, then Robert Prevost, was in Rome, and days later was elected superior of his religious order. Vatican News republished excerpts from his first homily after that, where he reflected on the violence and its roots in poverty and injustice.
129 missing as ferry capsizes
BANJARMASIN, Indonesia) -- Indonesian rescuers say about 129 passengers and crew are missing after a ferry carrying more than 240 people overturned in bad weather in the Java Sea.
At least 108 people were rescued and the bodies of six passenger were recovered Sunday as the search operation expanded in waters around the vessel's last known position. Authorities say the vessel lost contact around 2 a.m. after encountering rough seas and waves up to 10 feet high.
Celine Dion makes comeback
NANTERRE, France -- Celine Dion has returned to the stage, performing her first full concert in over six years. She sang "All By Myself" as an encore, a song she's been known for since 1996. Dion was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in 2022, a rare disease affecting her throat. Her Sunday concert in Nanterre, France, included 25 songs over 2 hours and 15 minutes. The show is part of a punishing schedule of 16 shows in five weeks.
Trump to lift 10% tariff on
Irish whiskey after clamor
DOONBEG, Ireland -- President Donald Trump says he plans to remove a 10% tariff on Irish whiskey.
Trump said Sunday during the trophy ceremony for the Irish Open that he'd been asked about the issue by everyone, including some of the golfers.
He said, "Everybody's been bugging me" to do it. "And I said, 'On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off'" of Irish whiskey. Irish whiskey currently faces the standard tariff imposed by Trump on most imports from the European Union, which was reduced from 15% to 10% in July.
Trump to Ukraine: Halt
strikes on Russian fuel
KYIV, Ukraine -- President Donald Trump has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian diesel fuel infrastructure, saying attacks are causing a global shortage.
Trump spoke Sunday at the Irish Open after diesel prices in the U.S. hit record highs. His comments came hours after large-scale drone strikes overnight killed and injured civilians in Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian drones killed two people near an oil and industrial hub in Russia's Tatarstan, according to local officials, while Ukrainian authorities reported on Russian drones pummeling the Black Sea port of Odesa and starting a fire near a border crossing with Poland.
US rep recalls surviving
emergency lake landing
WAUSAU, Wis. -- U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, a candidate for Wisconsin governor, wiped away tears and laughed as he shared how thankful he is to survive following a harrowing late-night emergency landing into a lake of the small plane he was riding in.
Tiffany, a Republican endorsed by President Donald Trump, told reporters Sunday that the pilot said that the plane had lost power and to tighten his seat belt before they hit the water.
Both he and the pilot swam to a shallow spot in Lake Wausau and waited until emergency responders reached them by airboat. Tiffany and the pilot suffered cuts and received
stitches.
The Marathon County Sheriff's Office said the emergency landing happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday.
