Judge rejects Maxwell's
claims, bid for prison release
NEW YORK -- Ghislaine Maxwell's bid to overturn her sex trafficking conviction and be freed from prison was rejected by a federal judge Tuesday who said the claims by Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend and longtime associate that new evidence had emerged were "demonstrably meritless."
Maxwell filed a habeas petition last December seeking to set aside her conviction and free her from a 20-year prison sentence, claiming exonerating information was withheld and false testimony presented at her trial, resulting in a "complete miscarriage of justice."

Republican 2026 convention
As if there was any doubt, Republicans' midterm convention will be the Donald Trump show, with the president appearing at both nights of the event in Dallas next month.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance will headline the two nights, with Vance speaking Wednesday night and Trump on Thursday.
The unusual event is aimed at promoting the party's candidates and the Trump administration's agenda.
Trump is set to appear both nights in what the RNC billed as "a primetime showcase for President Trump's success, candidates, and causes that have propelled the 2026 midterms to unprecedented focus."
Pa. reports first 2 measles
deaths in the US this year
PHILADELPHIA -- Two unvaccinated Pennsylvania residents have died after being infected with measles, the first U.S. deaths this year related to the contagious virus.
State health officials announced the deaths Tuesday. They did not reveal any details about the people who died, other than that they lived in Lancaster County, west of Philadelphia.
"My deepest sympathies are with the loved ones who are facing this unimaginable loss," said state Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen. "Because measles was largely eliminated in the Commonwealth for more than three decades, people are not familiar with this disease and don't fully understand the potential severity of the illness."
The U.S. has now seen five measles-associated deaths in the last two years -- more than the combined total of reported deaths over the previous three decades -- and is enduring its worst year for measles since 1991.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- U.S. Sen. Darline Graham has won the Republican nomination to replace her late brother Lindsey Graham on South Carolina's general election ballot. Darline Graham defeated U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday's special Republican primary runoff, two weeks after they were the top two finishers in a 10-way primary.
Despite being a political unknown, Darline Graham bested some of South Carolina's top political names in the special election.
She was appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster to serve out the remaining months of her late brother's current term and swiftly notched an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
US attack on boat in
Caribbean kills four
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. military has attacked another boat suspected of being used to smuggle drugs in the Caribbean Sea, killing four people. Tuesday's attack brings the number of people who have been killed in boat strikes by the U.S. military to at least 227 in 68 strikes since the Trump administration began targeting those it calls "narcoterrorists" almost a year ago. As with most of the military's statements on strikes in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, U.S. Southern Command said it targeted the alleged drug traffickers along known smuggling routes. The military did not provide evidence that the vessel was ferrying drugs.
