3 Mahoning schools vie for best snowplow

Three Mahoning Valley schools will be watching the Ohio Department of Transporation’s Facebook page to see if they have won this year's District 4 title for best painted snowplow. The program, through ODOT, has schools across the state seeking the title of best snowplow.
The program is over ten years old and is offered in each of ODOT's districts. District 4 covers Mahoning County, along with Trumbull, Ashtabula, Portage, Stark and Summit counties.
"We usually get around 20 schools participating," said Justin Chesnic, public information officer for District 4. "The plows are dropped off at the participating schools in early September and are picked up in October."
He said the schools, mostly art classes, have over a month to finish their design and paint the plow. The finished plow is then gone over for safety and is placed on one of the local state plow trucks.
"We will post all our Paint-a-Plows on the District 4 Facebook page," Chesnic said. "Voting will last for two weeks sometime around Thanksgiving and the winner will be announced sometime before the end of the year."
This year's Mahoning County submissions are from Jackson Milton, Austintown, and South Range. Jackson Milton and South Range are previous winners of the contest and as winners, they received a banner for their classroom.
Chesnic said one of the joys of the program is seeing the plow out on the roadway. Painted plows from previous years are still in use at the Canfield ODOT post.
