BOARDMAN -- More than 350 students gathered in the parking lot at Stadium Drive Elementary School on Friday for the school's annual Patriot Day Ceremony to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

They were joined by Boardman police officers and firefighters, along with members of the Boardman High School Marching Band.

The event began at 8:45 a.m. outside Stadium Drive Elementary, and focused on remembering the events of Sept. 11, 2001, while recognizing the everyday heroes who serve as "helpers" in the Boardman community.

Students learned about the courage and service of police officers, firefighters and other emergency responders. Boardman fire Chief Bill Glaser spoke to students on how police and fire personnel are "there to help."

Stadium Drive Principal Mike Zoccali discussed the significance of Patriot Day and the heroes students encounter every day.

As part of Stadium Drive's longtime Patriot Day tradition, students planted a Royal Raindrop Crabapple tree near the playground as a symbol of remembrance and hope.
