YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are searching for a Pennsylvania man who disappeared Tuesday evening on the city's West Side.
A Youngstown police report states that William Maine disappeared hours after reportedly being released from a hospital following the partial amputation of his right foot. Maine was last seen outside CSL Plasma near the corner of Mahoning Avenue and Meridian Road sometime before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The report states that Maine is white, about 6-foot-3 and weighs about 240 lbs. He has green eyes, brown and gray hair and a boxing-glove tattoo on his right forearm.
He was last seen wearing a light gray shirt, black shorts, one white sock and one yellow sock. Maine was using one crutch, and the remaining portion of his right foot should be bandaged.
The report states that police were called to the plasma center just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by Maine's sister, Misty Trosch, who told officers she has power of attorney for her brother.
Trosch told police that Maine may have been released from a Pennsylvania hospital earlier that day after his surgery. The report states Maine's girlfriend, Karen Hemby, then brought him to the plasma center, where she attempted to make a donation.
The report states that Maine was asked to leave the business about 5 p.m. and was supposed to wait in Hemby's car. A plasma center employee told Hemby that Maine was seen outside speaking with other people. However, after her donation was refused and she left, Maine was nowhere to be found.
Hemby told police she searched nearby businesses, gas stations and bars, as well as Mahoning Avenue and Meridian Road, unsuccessfully.
The report states that employees at Burger King told Hemby that Maine had entered the restaurant and complained about not receiving items he ordered in the drive-thru. Hemby told police that they had not visited the restaurant and that Maine had been behaving differently because of the pain medications he was prescribed for the amputation.
The report states that Maine had been prescribed 15 milligrams of oxycodone and 10 milligrams of OxyContin after his surgery. The medications were not inside Hemby's car. Trosch contacted Maine's son, who checked Maine's home but found neither Maine nor the medication there.
Hemby told police that Maine had no recent history of illegal drug use and had not used drugs during the previous 10 years.
The report states police searched behind the Mahoning Avenue plaza, a nearby wooded area and multiple other locations, including area hospitals, but did not locate him.
Youngstown notified Austintown police because of the plasma center's proximity to the township.
Police reviewed surveillance video from CSL Plasma showing Hemby and Maine arriving about 3:15 p.m. The video later showed Maine leaving the business and walking around the parking lot, repeatedly approaching and moving away from the building.
He was last seen near the eastern end of the building before moving out of camera range. The video showed Hemby leaving the parking lot at 5:32 p.m.
Maine's cellphone was left inside Hemby's vehicle. Trosch also checked his bank account and found no transactions made after his disappearance. The report states that Maine was not known to carry cash.
Police entered Maine's name into a statewide law enforcement database Tuesday night as a missing and endangered adult because of his recent surgery, prescription medications and risk of further injury.
