Bikeway in park to close
Mill Creek MetroParks will temporarily block off a section of the MetroParks Bikeway beginning Monday to allow for improvements and resurfacing.
The MetroParks Bikeway will be closed from Silica Road to County Line Road as well as access to the bikeway at Ohltown Road and Webb Road for the duration of the project.
Park officials said the improvement project will help maintain and enhance the trail for future use and will include milling of the existing asphalt surface, installation of a new asphalt overlay, placement of topsoil along the shoulders, and installation of compacted aggregate along the shoulders.
Work is anticipated to be completed within one week, weather and site conditions permitting. Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances may delay the schedule.
Cemetery Mass slated
Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services of the Diocese of Youngstown invites the community to attend Bishop David Bonnar's annual cemetery Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Calvary Cemetery, 238 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown.
The event is for families to come together in prayer, faith and remembrance to honor and remember loved ones.
Dead animals discovered
The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project's Volunteer Humane Department responded to a call Wednesday to assist Girard police with abandoned animals inside of an East Second Street residence.
Jason Cooke, founder of Healthy Hearts and Paws, said that upon arrival, four deceased animals were located inside -- all in states of decomposition and showing signs of starvation. Recovered were one large dog, two cats and one snake.
Cooke said no food or water was present in the residence, which was found to be in deplorable condition, with urine and feces throughout.
Criminal charges are expected to be filed, he said.
