GIRARD -- City officials are in the process of finding a safety service director as Glenn Holmes -- who has been serving in the position since last spring -- has submitted his resignation.
Mayor Mark Zuppo said Tuesday that Holmes will be leaving Oct. 1 for personal reasons.
Zuppo said while the city is looking for a replacement, Zachary Teter, who serves as the city's new engineer, will take on the duties of the service director.
Also, fire Chief James Petruzzi and police Chief John Freeman will take on the duties of safety director with each chief overseeing the other chief's department.
Zuppo said he also has been handling some of the duties of the position.
The safety service director oversees the day-to-day operations of the various safety and service departments of the city.
He said the city is advertising through next week to fill the position. Zuppo said once applications are received by the Sept. 17 deadline, officials will schedule and conduct interviews and have someone in place by Oct. 1.
Zuppo said he appreciates the service that Holmes provided to the city.
Holmes started in April as safety service director, replacing Mark Ragozine, who was named the new township administrator in Boardman.
Holmes, who grew up in Girard, also previously served as mayor of McDonald and served as a state representative for the 63rd District. He also was on the Ohio Parole Board in 2019.
Zuppo said Holmes will be using accumulated time off he has from when he worked for the state and has carried over.
