STRUTHERS -- The Struthers Board of Education heard from resident and parent Nick Pastella about the importance of including girls flag football as a sport at the board's September meeting.
He noted that grants for equipment and uniforms would be possible through the Cleveland Browns Girls Flag Football Initiative. Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and colleges are now actively offering NAIA collegiate scholarships.
"I would like to see every girl get a scholarship," Pastella said.
The board took the matter under immediate consideration and approved the request to form a girls flag football club.
In other business, the board:
● Approved the financial report and investments for August.
● Approved the contract with Supplemental Educational Services Inc. for Title I services at ACLD School in Youngstown.
● Approved rescinding the contract with Supplemental Educational Services Inc. for Title I services at Holy Family School in Poland.
●Approved the clinical affiliation agreement between Cleveland State University School of Nursing and Struthers schools to assist nursing students with clinical learning experiences.
● Approved the contract with AARIS Therapy Group for Title I services at Holy Family School.
● Approved interpreting services between Stuthers City Schools and Easter Seals of Northeast Ohio at the rate of $60 per hour.
● Approved the engagement letter from the Ohio auditor for fiscal year 2026 audit engagement. The cost of the audit will be no more than $26,402.
● Approved entering into a contract for Title IV Parental Transportation to declare bus transportation impractical for these students: Autumn Davis, Valley Christian; Brayden Feorchak, ACLD; Lucas McDowell and Jonathan Robles, Cardinal Mooney; and Jour'Nei Moore, Youngstown Preparatory Academy.
● Approved the substitute bus driver rate of $16.09 per hour.
● Accepted a donation from the United Steelworkers to four families (13 children) in the district to purchase school clothes and supplies.
● Approved the cost to repair the outdoor stairwell at the Manor Avenue building at $35,250.
● Approved Family Medical Leave for two classified employees.
● Approved the appointment of Lisa Rucci to the position of extended school year literacy tutor at $50 per hour and no more than 20 hours per week.
● Accepted the resignation of Sherry Harrison, cafeteria technician.
● Accepted the resignation of Jules Runge, paraprofessional.
● Appointed Macayla Razo to paraprofessional at a salary of $20,069.
● Hired Theodore Myers as cafeteria cleaner at $15.77 per hour.
● Hired Tim Hahn as Success After Six Program bus driver at $21.28 per hour.
● Approved the renewal of Tom Otto as head baseball coach at a $4,776 supplemental salary.
● Approved the renewal of Meghan Dubos as head softball coach at a $4,776 supplemental salary.
● Approved agreement between United Way of Youngstown and Struthers Elementary School for Success After 6.
