CANFIELD -- The Junior Fair auctions at the 180th Canfield Fair brought in nearly $1.3 million, the fair board has announced.
Two types of auctions take place during fair week:
• Traditional auctions where 100% of monies accumulated are given back to the individual who raised the animal. These totaled $1,234,878. The youth typically use the funds earned to put toward their project animal(s) for the future year, toward their college fund or a combination of both. All money collected is distributed back to the individuals selling their animals.
• Scholarship and charity auctions, where 100% of the monies accumulated from the sale of the auctioned animals benefit a designated scholarship or individual chosen by the seller. This year, $59,542 was raised for 11 beneficiaries.
The Junior Fair auctions include cheese, turkeys, rabbits, beef cows, dairy cows, hogs, goats, chickens, fudge and ducks.
Canfield Fair Board Directors Don (Trey) Snyder III and Bob Jarvis oversee the Junior Fair program.
"It is always thrilling to see the youth rewarded for their hard work and efforts with strong sales numbers. These kids work year-round to feed and raise their animal, teaching them life lessons and instilling a solid work ethic in them," Snyder said.
Jarvis added, "It brings a tear to your eye to see the kids donate the sale of their animal for charity and not take any of the proceeds. As a parent myself, it makes me so proud to see our future leaders of tomorrow learn about philanthropy from an early age and put service above self."
Neither the Canfield Fair Board nor the Junior Fair program benefit from the auctions. All proceeds are distributed out and any credit card fees that are assessed are paid by the purchaser. A full list of purchasing companies and individuals will be released at www.canfieldfair.com at a later date.
