MILTON TOWNSHIP -- A time capsule burial ceremony took place Saturday at Craig Beach in Lake Milton State Park and it is hoped that the time capsule's contents will give future generations a glimpse into what Lake Milton's community was like in 2026.
"Its purpose is to kind of embody what the pulse of Lake Milton is right now in 2026," said Milton Township Trustee Wendy DiBernardi, a member of the Lake Milton Women's League, which hosted the event.
The event was part of a second America250 event in Milton Township. Lake Milton's America250 was organized by several community groups.
"We started working on this months ago as a big community group," DiBernardi said. "The Women's League decided to take part with the time capsule."
The organization reached out to numerous people across Milton Township to add mementos to the time capsule such as local businesses, community organizations, the trustees and the Jackson-Milton Local School District.
"I had probably 10 other women helping, and everybody said, 'I'll take these three or four businesses, I'll reach out to these organizations, tell them what we want and then make it all happen,'" DiBernardi said. "It was just a group effort of getting everybody here today assembled to bring something for the time capsule."
DiBernardi said she believes when the time capsule is opened, Milton Township will have grown, but she hopes it will retain its small town identity.
"I think it is a growing community. It'll be interesting to see what it is in 50 years," DiBernardi said. "I love that small town vibe, but I think it's inevitable that we will grow."
The time capsule will be stored in Milton Township Town Hall. It will not be opened until the 300th anniversary of the United States in 2076.
