WARREN -- Trumbull County Commissioners are weighing budget concerns of the heads of general fund departments to ensure they will be able to complete 2026 without going into deficit.
The commissioners last month received the amounts each of the departments estimate they will need to finish the year. Several departments noted they will require more money than was allocated to them at the beginning of the year.
Thirteen of the 16 departments are projected to need an additional combined $3,732,163 to complete the year.
The commissioners over the past week have been reviewing the needs of the departments and have been working to determine if the county has the funds to fulfill their additional funding requests.
Commissioner Tony Bernard said the county cannot provide money that it does not have.
Commissioner Denny Malloy noted the board at the end of 2025 provided budgets to the departments based on sales tax revenue projections provided to the commissioners by the county's budget commission. He noted that the budget commission's revenue projections generally are conservative.
"We have been collecting more in sales tax than was projected," he said.
During Wednesday's meeting, the commissioners also:
•Approved an off airport land lease for $650 per year with the U.S. Department of Transportation that will begin Oct. 1.
•Approved a resolution to vacate a 60-foot wide street shown in Leavittsburg Garden Farms plat.
•Approved the purchase and installation of three Meyer 8-foot lot Pro snowplow packages from Myer's Equipment Corp. of Canfield for the three Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD facilities trucks at a cost of $24,000.
• Approved construction of the Crain Drive Sanitary Improvements project in Weathersfield and approved an additional $297,408 in the cost, increasing the total cost to $646,054.
•Authorized a notice to proceed for Frank Maruccio Asphalt & Paving of Hermitage, Pa., for the Donley Road Street Improvements Project, which is being funded through a $235,856 Community Development Block Grant
•Accepted a $62,300 increase from the Ohio Department of Transportation for Trumbull County's senior and disabled transportation services. This increase will push the program's budget to $312,700.
•Adopted a resolution proclaiming Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day in Trumbull County to honor the more than 500 veterans that were awarded Purple Hearts after they were wounded while serving in the military.
