POLAND -- Mary Tursky and Kurt Hildebrand, co-chairs of the America250 Committee, gave an update at this week's Village Council meeting on the Poland Historical Society soiree set for Oct. 10.
"We already sold 60 of the planned 300 tickets for the event," Hildebrand said. "Of course, we can size that number up or down as needed."
Tursky said Edison Lighting will handle lighting of the grounds, a string quartet will play and set the atmosphere and the band Guys Without Ties will perform as guests "dance under the stars."
"Inside Village Hall, we will have a mini museum," she said "We are working [with several] local museums and private collectors. We would like to have access to the hall on Wednesday before the event so we can begin setting up the display areas."
She said the event will feature a lot of Poland's history in the mini museum. She said her committee is working with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society to loan items from the Arms Museum.
During Tuesday's meeting, council and the police chief signed off on the alcohol license permit.
Tursky also mentioned the Poland Historical Society's Tour of Homes is scheduled Sept. 19. Information on the tour and the soiree will be available on the society's website at www.polandhistoricalsociety.com.
On a different matter, council discussed the school resource officer contract with the schools. The village plans to provide two SROs for the schools.
Police Chief Don Lambert said one of the SROs is on medical leave until Oct. 12. He said there could be a way to cover the time for the second SRO, but it would require talking with the school district. Council agreed to have Lambert proceed to discuss it with the school.
In other business, council:
• Approved payment of $3,000 to RRS Landscaping for removal of a tree on the Hine property.
• Approved payment not to exceed $3,000 for LEADS police computer software.
• Approved auctioning a 2007 BMW 328XI that was impounded by police.
• Heard citizen complaints on raised sidewalks needing repaired and on cleaning nuisance properties. Councilman Chris Graff said the conversation needs to take place when Village Solicitor Jay Macejko is present.
• Discussed ending once-per-month summer council meetings and going back to two per month all year.
