Poland Township trustees cut staff in three departments during its meeting Wednesday to keep from a projected deficit at the end of 2027. The cuts were not unanimous, but Trustee Frank DeMain said they were necessary.
The cuts approved at the meeting by a 2-1 vote were three police officers and one zoning position. Trustee Eric Ungaro was the "no" vote on those positions.
The cutting of one clerical position received a unanimous vote.
All positions cut will receive at least a two-week notice.
Ungaro then made a motion to downsize the street department to four employees, but it died for lack of a second.
"The last thing I'll say is those numbers that I gave out, those estimates with the end result being around the $521,000 mark, I think it is safe to say we have a $130,000 gap still to close," DeMain said. "There will be further reviews between now and the next month or two."
In other business:
• Trustees approved $2,000 for the purchase of supplies and equipment for the stormwater crossover replacement project. The cost will come out of road department funds.
• Trustees unanimously approved J. Razo Construction Co.'s bid of $24,335.92 as the best low bid for the township's catch basin replacements on Bishop Road and Duncan Drive. Ungaro said the funding for the project comes from sales tax monies.
