YOUNGSTOWN -- Because of a number of sinkholes, which often means collapse of a sewer line, a stretch of Indianola Avenue will be closed starting Wednesday for about one week.
"The sinkholes showed up so we'll have to dig it out and look for sewer line issues," said Charles Shasho, the city's deputy director of public works. "Typically when there are sinkholes, it's because a sewer line collapsed. We're working on this right away."
The brick-paved Indianola Avenue from Homewood to Poland avenues will be closed for the work though local traffic will be maintained, Shasho said.
"It's in terrible condition," Shasho said of that part of Indianola Avenue.
That section of the road is going to be paved in the next month as part of the citywide paving program, Shasho said.
"We'll remove some of the base material and look to fix the sinkholes," Shasho said. "When we're done, we'll pour concrete back onto the road. It's going to get paved in the next month so we want to find out where the problems are with the sewer line and fix that first. After that, the road will be paved."
