AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday night.
A news release issued by the department on Wednesday states that officers responded to the 4100 block of Mahoning Avenue about 12:30 a.m. after someone reported a male had been shot.
The release states that police found a man in his late 20s with a gunshot wound to his lower leg. The man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.
"At this time, there is no one in custody, and we have no suspect information to release publicly. If additional information becomes available it may be released."
The 4100 block is home to a VFW post and two bars -- Chippper's and The Marigold III. The shooting occurred roughly in between the two bars, in front of Chipper's eastern parking lot. One bartender told The Vindicator that their establishment had closed two hours before the incident occurred.
She said they do not know who the victim is or what happened to him beyond what they have learned from local news reports.
A security guard at the other bar said it was his night off, but he came to the scene when he was notified of the shooting. He said a police officer told him that the man was shot by someone in a passing car as he was walking past the bars.
He said the victim is not someone he recognizes from the bar.
