Man pleads guilty in 2025 gunfire on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN -- Johnathan Spikes, 48, of Youngstown, pleaded guilty Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or school safety zone with a firearm specification for a June 14, 2025, incident on North Portland Avenue on the West Side.
Spikes was set for trial Monday morning before Judge John Durkin before he entered the guilty plea.
Spikes is accused of shooting at a house and a car, but no one was injured. The plea agreement Spikes reached with county prosecutors is for Spike to get five to six years in prison. He will be sentenced Aug. 19.
Officers went to the 100 block of North Portland Avenue on June 14, 2025, for gunfire with a possible shooting victim. But when they arrived, there were no shooting victims, a police report states.
But they found a vehicle and house that had been struck by gunfire.
Officers also found Spikes at his home in the 100 block of North Hartford Avenue and took him to the detective division at the Youngstown Police Department.
He was later taken to the county jail, the report states. He was indicted last August on the discharging firearms charge and gun specification.
He has been in the county jail since June 14, according to jail records, which spell his first name differently than Mahoning County Common Pleas Court records.
