Liberty police arrest ‘belligerent’ man on DUI

By Br 2 min read

LIBERTY -- A Youngstown man who Liberty police noted was acting "belligerent" with them after being found unresponsive a short time before is set to return to court next month.

Luke Scudier, 20, pleaded not guilty to DUI, offenses involving underage persons and open container in front of Girard Municipal Court Judge Jeffrey Adler Tuesday morning.

According to a police report, officers were called to the area of Arabian Lane and Warner Road on Monday afternoon for a man unresponsive behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, who dispatchers said was slumped back in the seat and showed no movement when the caller banged on the window of the Buick Encore.

The report states that Scudier was initially unresponsive to sternum rubs the officer provided, adding that he noticed several empty Michelob Ultra containers and an alcoholic odor coming from the vehicle as he continued to try to wake up Scudier. The report states Scudier eventually opened his eyes, which were noted to be glossy, and he was unsteady on his feet as he exited the vehicle, but became increasingly agitated as Liberty Fire Department personnel spoke with him, telling them he was in Butler County when asked where he was.

He refused treatment from fire personnel, telling them he was arrested a short time ago in that location, the report states. Scudier declined to perform a field sobriety test and was arrested after also refusing to provide a breath sample, and the officer attempted to locate someone who could pick him up.

The report states Scudier's parents refused to pick him up, with his father noting that Scudier was aggressive with them the previous evening and left the house highly intoxicated. He encouraged officers to transport his son to jail.

The report states Scudier became increasingly agitated, demanding officers allow him to smoke his vape despite being underage and eventually kicking the vehicle's partition because of it. Scudier told officers he was going to make himself throw up, so that officers would have to clean it up and that maybe they'd give him his vape.

Scudier was booked into the Trumbull County jail on his charges, but was released later that day.

He is set to appear back in court Sept. 16, court records show.
