YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Garland Avenue resident reported that about 3:43 a.m. Thursday to being awakened by gunfire "followed by a loud explosion."
When a city police officer arrived at the East Side home, he spoke with city firefighters, who said they discovered fire on the porch and a blanket on fire in the street, a report states.
Firefighters said they smelled gasoline or other accelerants when they arrived. They did not observe any incendiary devices after extinguishing the fire.
The resident was reported sleeping when awakened by the explosion and gunfire. The resident ran downstairs and saw the front of the house on fire. The resident grabbed the family dog and ran to a house nearby. The resident did not see anyone firing a gun or starting the fire on the porch, the report states.
The report listed "arson" as the type of call involved. The report did not mention any injuries.
Police officers saw gunfire damage on the front of the home, but were told that it was old damage from a previous incident. No bullet shell casings were found.
A person approached police officers who had a video of the incident, but all that could be observed was a large flash of flame on the front porch. No one was seen walking to or from the home. No one could be seen firing a gun either, the report states.
