YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown police took a boy to the detention facility at the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center following a Monday morning attack in a room at a Safehouse Residential Services facility on Eastview Avenue off Jacobs Road on the city's East Side.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to the facility at 9:39 a.m. Monday for an assault and spoke with staff members and an administrator who said the boy entered another child's room, despite it being locked. The boy bypassed the lock by using a plastic comb, the report states.
The boy then assaulted the other child. Personnel showed police surveillance video of the assault. Staff members had transported the child victim to Akron Children's Hospital in Boardman. The hospital advised that they were discharging the victim from the emergency room and would need to be taken to Akron Children's Hospital in Akron for surgery, the report states.
Staff members returned the victim to the Safehouse facility after the child was discharged from the Boardman hospital, the report states.
An officer saw bruising and swelling to the left side of the victim's face. The victim also had a laceration on the cheek near the mouth, which "penetrated from the outside all the way through to the inside of (the) mouth."
The victim told police he or she was lining up chairs in a common room as part of their chores. But the suspect did not like the way the victim was doing it. The victim went to his or her room, with the suspect entering after that and attacking the victim.
A crime scene officer came to the scene to photograph the victim's injuries. Facility personnel said they would transport the victim to the Akron facility for more treatment.
The report states that the juvenile justice center said they would take the suspect. Police took the suspect there on suspected second-degree felonious assault.
