YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Police Department and Mahoning County Coroner's Office are investigating after police responded to West Ravenwood Avenue near Hillman Street on the South Side on Thursday evening and confirmed a caller's claim that there was a dead body in the backyard.
When officers arrived for the 7:12 p.m. call, they spoke with a woman who said that about an hour before the person called 911, a man told her he had discovered a dead body about two days earlier.
The caller said he or she wanted to see if the man was telling the truth before calling the police. Other witnesses arrived at the location and saw a man lying down. Officers went to the backyard and saw that an unidentified man was lying down with extreme decomposition.
Officers then spoke with a man who said he does "random wood work and gathers his lumber supply from the wooden area" behind a home on West Ravenwood Avenue.
Officers protected the scene until crime scene officers and personnel from the coroner's office arrived. The body was removed from the scene.
