YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown police arrested a 39-year-old man in a Wednesday morning incident on West LaClede Avenue on the South Side after a neighbor called the homeowner to tell him someone was taking items from his house.
The homeowner came home and saw the suspect running out of his house and down the driveway while carrying items from his house.
The 911 call reporting the burglary gave a specific description of the suspect: tie dye jeans, gray shirt, Ohio State hat, according to a Youngstown police report.
When two officers responded to the neighborhood, one officer spotted the suspect running with a weed whacker and other items in his hands.
And he was wearing exactly the items as had been described on the burglar, the report states.
The suspect was running south on Hillman Street and then east on Indianola Avenue. The officer stated in a report that as he turned his cruiser around to chase the suspect, he lost sight of him but knew that he could not have gotten far.
The officer spotted the suspect trying to duck behind a garbage receptacle. Police dispatchers said the suspect had a gun. The officer ordered the man to put his hands up. He eventually complied. The office arrested him and did not find a gun on him, the report states.
The officer took the man back to the home on LaClede, where the two witnesses identified the man as the person who they saw burglarizing the home. The suspect told an officer he did have a gun, but it was not his. He pointed to where the gun was.
An officer found the gun, and it was a realistic-looking b.b. gun, the report states. The suspect was named in the police report and is in the Mahoning County jail. But the person has no new charges on file in Youngstown Municipal Court. The Vindicator will name him when charges are filed.
