Lordstown officials approve $150K income tax payments to school district
LORDSTOWN — The village has approved payments of more than $150,000 to the Lordstown Local School District from the income tax of employees who work in the village.
Council voted this week to have Village Clerk William Blank pay the school district $64,499 from TJX HomeGoods, $9,558 from Matalco Inc. and $80,125 from Ultium Cells LLC.
The village and school district have an income tax sharing agreement in which the schools receive some of the income tax from employees who work at the three companies.
Council also approved final reading on placing a temporary moratorium not to exceed 180 days on the granting or issuing of any new permits or processing of applications for permits for businesses that utilize small mobile reactors or battery energy storage systems within the village limits.
Mayor Jackie Woodward said the village has no company using such equipment to her knowledge, but wants officials to have time to research such reactors and energy storage systems.
“We are planning ahead so we are ready if such a request comes up,” Woodward said.
A public hearing last month on the moratoriums had no residents speaking for or against them.
Council also recently placed an additional 180-day moratorium on any permits for a data center in the village. Woodward said she attended a mayor’s conference in Columbus recently and drove to New Albany to see the data centers there.
She noted that the lights on the data centers were very dim and she did not hear much noise coming from the buildings.
“I have been to New Albany. From what I saw and heard, the operations of the building are not loud. The lighting at the data center plants is dim. The lights on the streets nearby are brighter,” Woodward said.
A moratorium committee meeting will be at 6 p.m. July 16.
KUNKLE BUILDING
In other business, Woodward said Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership sought bids for the demolition of the Kunkle building off Tod Avenue. Bids are due by Monday.
She said once the company has been selected, the building will begin being demolished in two months. Buildings/Grounds Superintendent Martin Nelder said gas and electric service to the building will be shut off.
In other action, council:
• Approved the appointment of Stephen Williams of Greenville, Pa., as a new full-time police officer. Police Chief Brent Milhoan said the department is planning to hire one more officer.
• Approved an agreement with Verdantas LLC for professional consulting engineering services.
• Approved the county’s multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan from the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency. Having the plan approved will help the village receive federal funds for disaster relief.
