Girard rescinds layoff for intervention specialist

GIRARD — The Girard City Schools Board of Education this week approved bringing back an intervention specialist whose job was among three positions the board cut at its May meeting.

The board on Tuesday rescinded its previous motion from May and approved Maria Jarvis as an intervention specialist for the 2026-27 school year.

The board also approved transferring Grace Swertfager from intervention specialist to ED/MD intervention specialist for the upcoming school year.

In May, board members, citing financial issues facing the district, voted 3-2 to cut three teaching positions for next school year.

The positions cut were a third-grade teacher, music teacher and intervention specialist.

The cuts came one month after the board voted in April to cut a technology assistant and an assistant athletic director.

Board members Vincent Ragozine, Joseph Castor and Tammy King voted in support of the cuts while board members Scott Strain and Zachary Steiner voted against the action.

A vote to eliminate another intervention specialist position had Ragozine and King voting for; Strain and Steiner against; and Castor abstaining. The 2-2-1 vote meant the motion failed.

Treasurer Maureen Lloyd said that with bringing back the intervention specialist and the other cut never passing, there are two positions cut for the 2026-27 school year.

The board also approved the purchase of two new buses with one an 84-passenger bus at $146,300 and the other a 78-passenger bus at $138,883.

The two buses were bid through the Ohio Schools Council with one from Cardinal Bus Sales and Service and the other from Rush Truck Co.

Lloyd said two current buses — a 2011 and a 2013 — will be traded in to the Cardinal Bus Sales and Service and the Rush Truck Center

In other business, the board:

• Approved the transfer of Jaime King from first-grade teacher to intervention specialist and Samantha Robinson from second grade to first grade.

• Recognized several local businesses and organizations for their financial support and donations to the school district with the Ohio School Boards Association Business Honor Roll Award.

• Accepted the resignation of John Bello as the district’s IT director effective July 7.

• Revised the technology director position to a technology supervisor position. Travis Hecker will serve as an interim technology supervisor during July on an as-needed basis.

• Discontinued the blended learning module that was used during the coronavirus pandemic for students to make up work while not in school. Officials said students will use another system when making up work from calamity days when school is canceled.

Starting at $3.85/week.
