BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Board of Education during its regular meeting Monday unanimously approved a new three-year contract with the Boardman Education Association (BEA) that includes no raises in the base salary.
The board also approved a two-year agreement with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE), which represents more than 200 secretarial, transportation, cafeteria and custodial employees.
The teachers' contract is effective July 1 through June 30, 2029. The BEA represents 293 teachers.
The contract includes no increase to the base salary during the three-year agreement. The salary index was adjusted, which impacts salary levels according to years of experience and levels of education.
Health insurance deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket expenses will remain consistent with the previous contract. The agreement also includes an 18-month reopener, allowing both parties to revisit the contract should significant financial changes occur as a result of the rapidly changing legislative landscape surrounding state funding, according to a news release from the district.
As part of the agreement, two teacher workdays will be removed from the district calendar for a total of 180 teacher working days, and teachers will receive one additional personal day. A revised 2026-27 academic calendar reflecting those changes will be shared with families following board approval later this month.
The OAPSE agreement is effective July 1 through June 30, 2028, and includes a 2% salary increase in each year. Their contracted workdays remain the same.
"We value our teachers and staff and recognize their incredible impact on the success of our students," said Superintendent Chris Neifer. "It's important that Boardman stays competitive salary-wise to attract and retain top educators and support staff in the Valley, but we also have to balance that with fiscal responsibility to our community. We feel these contracts achieve that balance."
"The teachers gave, the board gave, no one is completely happy but we feel we were able to get the best deal for our teachers, the best deal for our students and the best deal for our community," said eighth grade social studies teacher and negotiator Vince Carnevale.
The Boardman Local School District serves approximately 3,600 students in grades K-12. The first day of classes is Aug. 26.
