America250 in Canfield to feature train exhibit
Staff photo / J.T. Whitehouse War Vet Museum model railroader Austin Brodzinski spent more than 12 hours laying down a new main line on the HO train display in time for this weekend. His hope is to be able to run the “American Freedom” train in that scale for the America250 celebration.
CANFIELD — The War Vet Museum will be open for tours following the Fourth of July parade on Saturday with a display featuring several specialty trains and some new trackage.
“We are expecting a good crowd this year as people celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday,” said Museum President Doug Speece.
In the basement, a lot of new red, white and blue will be making a debut on both the O gauge and the HO (half O) layouts.
The HO will feature a freshly laid main line as museum modelers put in long hours to ensure the track was down in time for Saturday. The fresh track should enable a specialty train, an HO Freedom Train, to operate on the layout.
“I am hoping it will make the curves without a problem,” said Austin Brodzinski.
On the O gauge layout, three specialty trains will be taking center stage. An O scale version of the Freedom Train will be pulling the passenger train as it chugs around the layout that represents World War II railroading.
Passing the Freedom Train will be the Preamble Express, pulling five flat cars loaded with the Liberty Bell, American landmarks, and some Revolutionary War soldiers. A third train painted for the America250 event will pull a military load on the mountain line.
The museum will be open after the parade for tours and will be a great place to cool down.
