Three residents escape morning South Side fire
YOUNGSTOWN — All three people inside escaped a 1:38 a.m. house fire in the 800 block of East Lucius Avenue that caused about $30,000 damage to the home and its contents.
One of the three, a 77-year-old man, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters responded to the 1.5-story single-family home with smoke showing and the residents out on the front patio, a Youngstown Fire Department report states. Smoke was “continuing to build as a search for the fire was initiated,” the report states. Firefighters spoke with a resident who said all occupants were accounted for and outside.
The home had working smoke detectors that alerted the residents to the fire, the report states.
Firefighters discovered that the fire was in a corner of the basement and they soaked the area where the fire originated. A burned box containing items was observed, along with other melted debris in that general vicinity.
The three people from the home were removed from the porch to the yard. The electricity and gas were cut off to the home. Parts of the home were ventilated.
Fire personnel determined that there was no forced entry to the home, and though one of the occupants said he is a smoker, he stated that he does not smoke inside and denied being in the area where the fire started.
The residents were escorted into the home to retrieve items. One of the residents said he would contact support agencies the next day if needed.
