Man, 31, was shot to death Sunday evening on Youngstown’s North Side
YOUNGSTOWN — A man, 31, was shot to death Sunday evening in the 200 block of Benita Avenue on the North Side of Youngstown.
A man, 29, a suspect in the killing, was at the scene when police arrived.
A Youngstown police news release states that officers were called to the 200 block of Benita Avenue at 6:19 p.m. for a shooting. When they arrived, they found a deceased man with multiple gunshot wounds and found the suspect, who turned himself in to police.
Youngstown police detectives, the police department’s crime lab and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office began their investigation, according to Lt. Mohammad Awad of the detective division stated in the press release.
The suspect was arrested and was taken to the Mahoning County jail. The release does not identify the suspect or the victim.
But a man who turned 29 about a month ago was booked into the Mahoning County jail Sunday and was charged by Youngstown police with murder. He is likely to be arraigned in Youngstown Municipal Court in the coming days.
Benita Avenue runs east-west between Fifth and Logan avenues, east of Crandall Park.
The killing is the fifth homicide of the year in Youngstown. At this time last year, there were seven.
