Liberty police respond to vehicle-damaging reports

LIBERTY — Township police are looking into a series of criminal damage reports involving vehicles in neighborhoods in the span of about seven hours on Tuesday.

According to a police report, officers were called to a Beverly Hills Drive residence for a criminal damage report around 9 a.m., speaking with a man who said he went outside that morning to learn that the driver’s-side door handle of his wife’s Kia Sedona van had been tampered with and damaged.

The officer noted that the plastic near the door’s keyhole was peeled off and there were scratches around the door handle, and the man said he was unable to open the door because of the damage.

The report states the man was outside around midnight and the vehicle wasn’t damaged then, adding that he didn’t have cameras and he might wish to pursue criminal charges if the suspect is identified.

Several hours later, an officer took a report at the station for a criminal damage report, where another man said his wife saw her driver’s side door handle was damaged. The officer observed that a piece of the car door handle was broken off, the report states, and the vehicle wasn’t identified.

An Aurora Drive resident called the station at 4:32 p.m. about a car part in her yard, seeing that the driver’s-side door handle of her son’s Kia Optima had been tampered with and damaged, and like the first report, the plastic near the door’s keyhole was peeled off, and there were scratches around the door handle.

The report states the officer also noticed the rear driver’s side window was damaged, too, and the woman told the officer that the car is always parked and locked in the driveway.

The report states the woman didn’t have any cameras, but she does want to pursue criminal charges if the suspect is identified.
