Canfield updated on major water leak
CANFIELD — There was not a lot of old or new business conducted at Wednesday’s brief city council meeting, but council members were updated on a major water leak at Sawmill and Herbert roads.
“We are trying to fix it ourselves,” Public Works Superintendent John Rapp said.
He said the leak is coming from a 33-year-old line. The line’s fittings are old and rotted and are a challenge to replace and repair.
“We may have to do a temporary shutdown of the water line at some point, but it would only be temporary,” he said.
Turning to the city’s sewer system, Rapp said the city hired a camera company to scope the city’s entire main sewer system and look for any water leaking into it.
“We should have the report (on it) next week,” Rapp said.
In other business:
* Councilman David Schialdone reported the parks and recreation board will have a busy year in 2027. He said the board is planning on a celebration for tree city and the Giant Pumpkin Growers will be coming to the area for a three-day event.
* Council President Christine Oliver reported the Cardinal Joint Fire District is advertising for a deputy fire chief at a salary of $92,000.
* City Manager David D’Apolito gave a quick report on the blue dye found in Sawmill Creek on May 27. He said it came from the Canfield Swim Club, where tennis courts were being repainted. Stormwater had washed the dye into the creek, and fire crews, HazMat and the Ohio EPA responded and determined the dye was not a threat. It has since been removed from the creek.
