Campbell police seek neglected dog’s owner
CAMPBELL — Police are looking for the owner of an abused and neglected dog found last week.
The Yorkshire Terrier, now named Riley, was found walking down the middle of Porter Avenue near 13th Street on June 3, and was in such deplorable condition that it needed a blood transfusion and its vet bills have since exceeded $8,500.
Patrolman Jim Conroy, the Campbell Police Department’s unofficial animal welfare officer, said the dog was first taken to MedVet Girard on June 4, and transferred later to MedVet Akron.
The initial reports from the emergency veterinarians indicated a flea infestation so bad that it required a blood transfusion, a very low blood sugar, severely infected mouth, severe dehydration, one eye missing and the other ruptured and deteriorated. The Yorkie also may be deaf.
The report states that fur has grown back over the missing eye socket, indicating that was an older injury, as was the damaged eye that will need to be removed.
Vets told Conroy and Kristin Kudla of The Rescue Inn in North Olmstead, who footed the initial bill for Riley’s vet care, that the focus was stabilizing the dog with fluids, sugar and basic nutrition. They said it was possible he would need a feeding tube.
A June 5 update indicated he still had an abnormally low temperature of 98.3 and was being treated with fentanyl for pain, nausea medication, B12 and antibiotics. His liver and kidney levels were poor.
“This is likely a senior dog that had kidney or liver issues before being dumped. While we are trying to help him, he is very sick,” the vets wrote.
They had to anesthetize him to pull several teeth and remove excessive tartar buildup. Eventually he’ll need to have all of them removed.
After his initial transfusion, his red blood count was at 29% and dipped overnight to 25%.
Conroy said the dog did not wander far and police suspect the owner lives nearby where he was found. Any information can be provided to Campbell police. They ask that callers provide contact information so they can follow up with additional questions if necessary.
Conroy said a reputable anonymous donor has staked a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the person responsible for Riley.
