2 indicted following May 12 police chase in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN — Two teens were indicted last week on charges related to a May 12 incident in Youngstown in which they are accused of fleeing from police during a traffic stop and having a weapon in their vehicle.
Gabriiyel Wright, 19, of Tod Lane, was indicted on failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor obstructing official business
Ta’Daryl Sly, 18, of East Boston Avenue, was indicted on improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor obstructing official business.
A Youngstown police report states that officers were on patrol in the area of Warren Avenue and Hillman Street at 11:43 p.m. when they saw a black SUV driving on Hillman with no rear lights.
An officer tried to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled eastbound on St. Louis Avenue and then north on Market Street traveling about 50 mph, ignoring red lights and swerving around other vehicles and driving into oncoming traffic, the report states.
The vehicle went downtown, turning onto Front Street before crossing over to Marshall Street and then south on Oak Hill Avenue at a speed of about 75 mph. It turned on to St. Louis Avenue and two people got out and ran toward St. Louis Avenue. At least one officer chased them on foot and caught up with them trying to jump a fence. The officer drew his firearm and ordered them to stop and show him their hands, and they complied.
When the vehicle was later searched, a handgun was found in a backpack and small baggies of a substance believed to be cocaine in another backpack. Wright told officers she was driving the car. Officers concluded based on things the two suspects said that a third person had also been in the car.
