Man taken to jail after threatening housemate with knife

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Police took a man into custody from a home on Old Furnace Road to the Mahoning County jail after he told a police officer he held a kitchen knife to the throat of a man living in the same home Tuesday night.

Officers were called to the home at 10:22 p.m. for a fight call and spoke with the suspect on the front porch. He said he was in the kitchen when the victim came downstairs, causing an argument.

He said an argument began, and the other man pushed him multiple times, causing him to fall and hit his head on the kitchen counter. An officer did not see any injury. The man told the officer he put a knife to the other man’s throat.

He said he and the other man had been friends for several years, and the other man had been living in the home for several years. Ambulance personnel checked the man who had the knife, and he refused any treatment.

The victim said he heard the suspect yelling in the kitchen and went there, telling him to stop yelling, and pushed him down, at which time the suspect pulled a knife from the kitchen counter and held it to the other man’s neck, causing two small lacerations, the report states.

The victim refused medical attention. An officer retrieved the knife from a bedroom and took it into evidence.

An officer also spoke with a woman in the home who said she heard yelling coming from the kitchen. When she entered the kitchen, she saw the suspect pushing her son to the floor. The suspect was taken into custody and then taken to the Mahoning County jail.

The suspect had no new criminal charges on file Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court.
