Man jailed after fracas on Hillman Street

YOUNGSTOWN — A 39-year-old man was taken to the Mahoning County jail Monday after an altercation on Hillman Street on Sunday night in which he is accused of asking another man if he could stay at his home a couple of nights, was refused and then broke in, assaulted the other man and threatened him with a gun.

The victim said the suspect showed up at 11 p.m. Sunday asking to stay there, but the victim refused to open the door. The suspect kicked open the front door of the home and broke the glass in the screen door. The man then walked up to the victim and punched him in the face, according to a police report.

Then the suspect showed a firearm. He did not point it at the victim, but he threatened to burn the victim’s house down, the police report states. The suspect then “fled the scene.”

The victim said he did not call police Sunday night because he did not have a phone. He waited until the next morning to ask a neighbor to use their phone. An officer saw pieces of the broken screen door on the porch and damage to the door.

While the officer was at the victim’s house, another person told the victim that the suspect was at the Burger King on West Midlothian Boulevard. The officer went there, but the suspect was not there.

Then the officer learned that the suspect was at International Towers downtown fighting a resident of that building. Officers went there and found the suspect walking east on Boardman Street and then onto Champion Street, where he was arrested and taken to jail.

The suspect did not have any new charges on file in Youngstown Municipal Court on Tuesday, but the report states he will be arraigned today in that court.
