Canfield man indicted on felonious assault

YOUNGSTOWN — Newton V. Murphy II, 41, of Leffingwell Road in Canfield, was indicted last week on charges of felonious assault and misdemeanor domestic violence in a Jan. 3 altercation in which Murphy is accused of throwing a woman against a wall, repeatedly banging her head off of the floor and trying to throw her down the stairs.

A Boardman police report states that the woman went to an urgent care facility Jan. 8 and told police she went there because of headaches she was having from an alleged assault by Murphy on Jan. 3.

She said the assault began after she grabbed Murphy’s phone during an argument.

The police report states that the woman had a visible lump on the back of her head and a large amount of bruising on her chest, arms and ribs.

The report stated that the woman also provided police with pictures of her injuries from the day of the alleged attack and throughout the days between then and her urgent-care visit.

She told police she did not call them sooner because she was afraid to deal with likely retaliation from Murphy for calling them.

Murphy later turned himself in to police after initial charges were filed in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman. If Newton is convicted of felonious assault, he could get about eight years in prison.
