Standoff in Austintown ends peacefully
AUSTINTOWN — A township man is in jail after a brief standoff Friday afternoon.
Austintown Police Lt. Dan Burich said Randall Rood Dabler, 32, is in the Mahoning County jail and will face domestic violence, weapons and other charges once an investigation into the standoff is complete.
The trouble began around 1 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of North Four Mile Run Road.
“We were called in for a domestic violence issue involving one male and one female,” Burich said. “He struck the female, and also held a gun to her head. She made it out of the residence safely after he destroyed her phone; she contacted us, we went down there.”
Burich said police tried to get in touch with Dabler using the phone and police loudspeaker but were unsuccessful. They then contacted Dabler’s father.
“He said ‘Yeah, I just spoke with him a little bit ago, he’s kind of prepared to go to jail.’ The female did say he was up all night drinking,” Burich said.
He said Austintown police first flew their own drone around the home and, through a window, saw Dabler lying on a bed.
“We didn’t know if he was passed out or just ignoring us,” Burich said.
Out of an abundance of caution, he said Austintown called in the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team, who used a smaller drone to fly inside the house and confirm that Dabler was passed out and there were no weapons nearby. The CRT entered the home around 2:30 p.m. and arrested Dabler.
Mahoning County court records show no prior offenses for domestic violence, only a guilty plea to an OVI charge from 2013.
