South Side chase leads to 8 felony charges

YOUNGSTOWN — Raheem Satterthwaite, 36, was arraigned Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on eight charges, many of them gun related, in an early Sunday incident in which he allegedly fled from police and fought with them after they got his car stopped on the South Side.

He was arraigned on charges of fleeing and eluding, tampering with evidence, being a felon in possession of a firearm, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, improperly handing firearms in a motor vehicle and assault. He returns for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. April 20.

The incident began at 12:55 a.m. Sunday when officers were told of a large crowd of people at West Commerce and Wick avenues downtown. An officer was told that multiple patrons of the bar were going to their vehicles in the public parking lot on West Commerce near Wick “to retrieve their guns,” the report states.

Officers arrived in the area and one was told that one of the men was in an older Chevy Impala with damage to the front end and showed the officer a photo of the man.

At 2:08 a.m., an officer was in his cruiser at South Avenue near Palmer Avenue when he saw an older White Chevy Impala with front end damage driving northbound with excessive windshield tint. The officer got behind the car and saw that it lacked a Mahoning County license plate sticker.

The officer made a traffic stop at South Avenue and Lucius Avenue and asked for license and registration. The officer saw that the driver matched the description given of the man involved in the downtown fight earlier.

The man, later identified as Satterthwaite, handed the officer a driver’s license for someone who did not match the driver’s appearance. An officer then saw a bullet magazine on the front seat and suspected there was a gun attached to it. The officer ordered Satterthwaite out of the vehicle, but Satterthwaite refused and instead drove off at a high rate of speed — with officers driving about 90 mph at times to keep up. The Impala then drove onto Rush Boulevard in Boardman and a cul de sac on Rush Circle.

Boardman police assisted as the car drove over a curb, knocking the tire off of one rim but continuing to drive as it made a couple of turns in the road. At South Avenue at Simon Road, officers tried to box in the Impala, which struck the bumper of a Youngstown police cruiser.

The Impala continued into a parking lot until the rim also came off of the Impala, and Satterthwaite ran from the vehicle while holding a white package, the Youngstown police report states. A Boardman officer saw that Satterthwaite was also carrying a gun.

A Boardman officer released his dog, which helped gain custody of Satterthwaite, who pushed away from officers and reached under his body near his waistband.

An officer saw that Satterthwaite had a handgun in his pants pocket. As an officer tried to disarm Satterthwaite, Satterthwaite continued to reach toward a gun. An officer kneed Satterthwaite in the face and tried to gain access to Satterthwaite’s hands while the other officer struck Satterthwaite in his side to gain control. Satterthwaite continued to resist, so a Boardman officer deployed a stun gun to achieve incapacitation, but Satterthwaite continued to pull away, the report states.

The stun gun was deployed again, and this time Satterthwaite was brought under control and disarmed. While one officer was wrestling with Satterthwaite, he bit the officer on the thumb, causing a laceration. The wrestling while Satterthwaite had a gun took about five minutes, the report notes.

Satterthwaite was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment of his injuries. An officer followed Satterthwaite’s flight path while running and found two more handguns, the report states.
