List of Mahoning, Trumbull 2026 road projects

A list of major road projects in progress or starting this spring and summer in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

MAHONING COUNTY PROJECTS

* Youngstown

Interstate 680 reconstruction

Cost: $55.8 million

Repaving and ramp work on Interstate 680 between state Route 193 and South Avenue, including bridge replacement over Price Road and Mill Creek. Northbound traffic will be detoured and ramp closures will occur throughout construction.

* Jackson and Austintown

Interstate 76/80 rehabilitation

Cost: $24 million

Concrete pavement rehabilitation using crack and seat with asphalt overlay on Interstate 76/80 from just west of the Ohio Turnpike to state Route 11. Traffic will be maintained during construction, but ramps will be closed for seven days during work. Detours will be posted.

* Boardman

U.S. Route 224 widening and safety improvements

Cost: $15 million

Addition of an eastbound through lane, turn lanes, medians and access changes along U.S. Route 224 between Market Street and Tiffany Boulevard. Southern Boulevard will have various closures during construction.

Berlin and Milton

U.S. Route 224 / State Route 534 resurfacing

Cost: $4.8 million

U.S. Route 224 from the Portage County line to state Route 534 and along state Route 534 to the Trumbull County line, will be repaved including minor bridge repairs. Traffic will be maintained during construction.

Boardman and Beaver

Interstate 680 resurfacing

Cost: $4.2 million

Interstate 680 from U.S. Route 224 to state Route 164 will be repaved along with minor bridge repairs. Traffic will be maintained during construction.

* Youngstown and Boardman Township

Interstate 680 noise walls

Cost: $4 million

Construction of noise walls along the east side of Interstate 680 between Midlothian Boulevard and south of Matthews Road. Traffic will be maintained during construction.

* Youngstown

U.S. Route 422 bridge deck replacement

Cost: $2.2 million

Replacement of the Wick Avenue bridge deck over U.S. Route 422. Wick Avenue will be closed for 75 days, with detours and temporary traffic patterns in place.

* Boardman

Interstate 680 lighting

Cost: $1.1 million

Lighting replacement and upgrades at the Interstate 680 and U.S. Route 224 interchange. Traffic will be maintained during construction.

State Route 7 signal upgrades

Cost: $750,000

Signal upgrades at Wildwood Drive and Meadowbrook Avenue, with additional work in Stark County. Traffic will be maintained during construction.

Afton Avenue sidewalk installation

Cost: $300,000

A new sidewalk will be built along Afton Avenue between Meadowbrook Avenue and South Avenue. Traffic will be maintained during construction.

TRUMBULL COUNTY PROJECTS

* Howland

State Route 46 intersection improvements

Cost: $7.7 million

Right turn lanes will be added from Route 46 to Warren Sharon Road. Existing left turn lanes will be extended. Traffic from Howland Wilson across Route 82 will prohibited, with Right-Turn-Only and cul-de-sacs added to prevent through traffic across the highway. A sidewalk will be added along the east side of Route 46 from Hunters Trail to East Market Street. A signal will be added at Route 46 and Howland Springs Road. The work will begin in April 2026 and last until October 2027.

* Brookfield and Hubbard Townships

U.S. Route 62 resurfacing

Cost: $4.3 million

U.S. Route 62 from just south of I-80 in Hubbard Township to the Pennsylvania State Line will be repaved. Direct access from state Route 7 to U.S. 62 will be closed for 30 days, but otherwise traffic will be maintained. The project will last from May to October 2026.

* Kinsman

State Route 5 bridge replacement

Cost: $4 million

The Bridge on state Route 5 just west of state Route 7 will be closed and replaced. Also included are bridge replacements in Ashtabula County. The project will begin in August 2026 and go to November 2027. State Route 5 will be closed for 21 days during the course of the project.

* Gustavus and Johnston

State Route 193 repaving

Cost: $2.3 million.

State Route 193 between State Route 5/88 and the Ashtabula County line will be repaved. Bridge repairs will also be made. There are no closures or detours expected. The project will run from April to November 2026.

* Bloomfield

State Route 87 chip seal

Cost: $1.4 million

State Route 87 from State Route 45 to Penniman Road will be chip sealed. Routes in Ashtabula County will also be chip sealed at the same time. The project will start in April and end in August.

* Liberty

State Route 193 repaving

Cost: $800,000

State Route 193 will be repaved from state Route 304 to the Mahoning County Line. No closures or detours are expected.

* Howland, Bazetta, Cortland

State Route 46 paving

Cost: $800,000

State Route 46 will be repaved from East Market Street in Howland to State Route 5 in Cortland. The project will go from April to November 2026. No closures or detours are expected.

* Gustavus

State Route 193 culvert replacement

Cost: $700,000

The culvert on Route 193 over Wakefield Creek will be replaced. State Route 193 will be closed for 14 days during the project, which will go from May to July 2026.

* Weathersfield

State Route 46 sidewalk replacement

Sidewalks along Route 46 will be replaced between Morris Street and Seaborn Street. A flashing beacon will also be installed at Stewart Street to alert to the crosswalk.

Cost: $300,000

The project will go from July to September. Detours and closures are not expected.

* Warren Township

U.S. Route 422 signal

Cost: $200,000

A new traffic signal will be installed at the ramp from state Route 5 to U.S. Route 422 in Warren Township. The project will begin in May 2026.
