Foundation increases funding, awards $944K to 57 nonprofits
The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley awarded $944,600 in its first 2026 grant cycle to 57 nonprofits serving Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
With support from fundholders and discretionary funds, $365,400 was awarded through the foundation’s General Grant program.
More than half of the funding came from three supporting foundations: the Western Reserve Health Foundation awarded $215,500; the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation awarded $204,500; and the William Swanston Charitable Fund awarded $117,200.
As part of an effort to better support nonprofits amid growing community needs, the boards of the foundation and its supporting organizations approved a one-year funding increase for 2026. The increase amounts to about $200,000 per quarter across all CFMV quarterly funding opportunities.
“Over the past two years, community-based organizations have seen the demand for services skyrocket while at the same time facing more challenges in acquiring the necessary funding to deliver those programs. While the Community Foundation’s dollars alone can’t bridge that gap, we believe this is an important step in making sure local nonprofits continue to provide crucial support to their communities,” says CFMV President Casey Krell.
“This is currently only a one-year increase, but the foundation is committed to finding ways to provide nonprofits with the support they need.”
In addition to four quarterly grant cycles, three annual funding opportunities are available this year: the Fund for Women & Girls, the Young Philanthropist Fund and the International Institute Funds.
The CFMV partners with donors to anchor a permanent and growing endowment and make investments in the Mahoning Valley that improve the quality of life for all residents.
The next application deadline for the CFMV and its supporting organizations is April 15.
