Canfield Fair announces headliners

AP Bret Michaels performs during Bret Michaels’ Christmas Party on Dec. 17, 2021, in St. Charles, Ill. Michaels will close out the 180th edition of the Canfield Fair with a Labor Day concert on Sept. 7.

Big & Rich and Bret Michaels will be the headliners for the grandstand concerts at this year’s Canfield Fair.

Big & Rich will be joined by Diamond Rio for a Sept. 6 concert, and Michaels will close the festival on Labor Day, Sept. 7, with Donnie Iris & the Cruisers as his opening act.

According to George Roman, fair board director in charge of entertainment, “Having powerhouse country stars, Big & Rich and Diamond Rio on Sunday night will have everyone on their feet singing along, while Monday night features local favorites Donnie Iris and Bret Michaels bringing a rock ‘n roll energy to the grandstand that will be different than we’ve seen in the past few years. Each year I am excited for fair week to arrive, but as we celebrate our 180th fair and the 250th birthday of our country, this year is going to be even more special.”

The fair board has partnered with JAC Live since 2017 to book its grandstand concerts.

JAC COO Ken Bigley said, “We wanted to go more with a fun, party, good-time atmosphere (this year), and both bands check that box.”

Big & Rich hasn’t played the fair since 2007. Between 2003 and 2017, the duo of Big Kenny and John Rich had more than dozen top 40 country hits, including “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy),” “Lost in This Moment” and “Look at You.”

The duo has three Grammy nominations, and it won a Billboard Music Award in 2004 for new country duo/group of the year.

Diamond Rio was one of the most successful country acts of the 1990s, with 20 singles hitting the top 20 on the Billboard country chart, including two No. 1s — “Meet Me in the Middle” and “How Your Love Makes Me Feel.” Its success continued into the 2000s with three more chart toppers — “One More Day,” “Beautiful Mess” and “I Believe.”

Diamond Rio won four CMA Awards for group of the year, two ACMs for top vocal group and a Grammy Award for best southern, country or bluegrass gospel album.

“Both have huge repertoires of hits,” Bigley said.

Michaels is best known as the lead singer of Poison, whose hair metal and rock ballad hits include “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Nothing But a Good Time,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Something to Believe In.”

Michaels starred on such series as “Rock of Love” and “Rock My RV” and competed on “The Masked Singer.”

The Butler, Pa., native will perform Friday in Pittsburgh as part of the NFL Draft festivities.

Michaels will be joined by another western Pennsylvania native. Iris, from Beaver Falls, had hits in the 1980s with “Ah Leah” and “Love Is Like a Rock,” and he also was a member of Jaggerz, which had a hit single with “The Rapper.”

“Those guys know each other,” Bigley said of Michaels and Iris. “They’re friends, and they both meant a lot to the area over the years. Putting Donnie on (the bill) was a no brainer, especially when it comes to the good-time part.”
