2 indicted on attempted murder are in custody
YOUNGSTOWN — Two men indicted last week in the stabbing of a man outside the Mahoning County jail last month are now in custody.
The suspects are accused of stabbing a man as he was walking out of the jail March 19. Sheriff’s detectives quickly identified both suspects and started a search for them, according to a news release from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and the county prosecutor’s office.
Lavell Collins, 28, of Southern Boulevard in Boardman and Julian Vanfossen, 22, of the Mahoning County jail, were secretly indicted last week by a Mahoning County Grand Jury on attempted murder with a repeat violent offender specification and two counts of felonious assault with repeat violent offender specifications.
Collins was booked into the Mahoning County jail Saturday during a traffic stop by Liberty police officers, according to a news release from the Mahoning County sheriff’s and county prosecutor’s offices. Fanfossen was booked into the jail March 30 by Mahoning County Sheriff’s deputies.
Both are expected to be arraigned today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Both men were identified only as John Does in last week’s grand jury report.
