Youngstown State sets events for Women’s History Month

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University will celebrate Women’s History Month throughout March with educational programs, lectures and community events hosted by the Women’s and Gender Studies program and campus partners.

This year’s theme, “Remember the Ladies,” honors the voices, activism and contributions of women past and present as the nation approaches America’s 250th anniversary.

Each year, YSU joins institutions across the country in recognizing Women’s History Month by highlighting the achievements and impact of women in history, culture, politics, labor and the arts. The Women’s and Gender Studies program, with support from university and community partners, has organized a series of events designed to engage students and the broader community.

• International Women’s Day Celebration, 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Penguin City Brewing Co., 460 E. Federal St., Youngstown. Sponsored by YWCA Mahoning Valley.

• “HERStory” Trivia Challenge, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the DeBartolo Hall Atrium. This fast-paced, team-based trivia event will focus on trailblazers, pop culture icons, social movements and moments that shaped women’s history. Lunch will be provided. The game will be played through the Sporcle Party app.

• “A Feminist Lens: The Art and Activism of Photographer Joan Roth” will be presented 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jewish Community Center and is sponsored by Congregation Ohev Beth Shalom. The program explores the intersection of photography, storytelling and feminist activism.

The program features Abigail Adams reenactor Kim Hanley, who will discuss women’s roles in the American Revolution. Refreshments will be inspired by 18th-century recipes. The event is presented in collaboration with America250 events.
